This week I'm taking the kids on a journey with Seuss. I'm sure you've seen that Kohls has Seuss (Horton Hears a Who, The Sleep Book, The Cat in the Hat, The ABC Book, and Happy Birthday to You! Plus all the stuffed animals!!! Target is selling all their Seuss books for $5 (hardback small) and $10 (hardback large).
This weekend I scooped up There's a Wocket in my Pocket from Target. I.fell.in.LOVE! And, now my kids love the book as much as I do! I created a fun response to the book last night. It's a freebie file! Read on to for my lesson today...
Lesson...
I shared three pockets (provided in the file) with pictures of a plane, bag, and web. We discussed our previous knowledge of rhyming and non sense words. I asked the kids what would happen if I removed the beginning sound and replaced it with a different letter. I took the p away and added a g. The kids couldn't stop giggling. We repeated the activity with all three words.
After our discussion, we read There's a Wocket in My Pocket. We identified each of the words and the rhyming non-sense word used to name the creature. At times, we used the object to help pronounce the words.
For a fun response, I had the kids choose a classroom object. My students were asked to illustrate the object. In order to name their creature, they needed to come up with a fun rhyming non-sense name by replacing the beginning sound with another sound. I prayed someone wouldn't accidentally say something naughty! Since we are working on digraphs, I decided to begin their writing on the final page leaving the 'Th' to be filled in by the student. Using the creatures name and the action needed to interact with the object, the kids came up with some responses that had me chuckling after school.
This child went a step further... not only was their a glabel on his table but he is with a friend named Mabel! Ahhhh!

This is very cute. When I was student teaching in 2nd grade last year I did something similar. I took all their individual pages and made a class Wocket in my Pocket book. They loved it.
